The best time for land-based whale watching in Walker Bay Reserve is during the southern right whale migration season, from June to December. Here’s a breakdown of the peak viewing periods:
June – August: Early arrivals of southern right whales, with increased sightings along the coast.
September – October: Peak season with the highest number of whales seen close to shore, engaging in breaching, lobtailing, and nurturing their calves.
November – December: Whale numbers begin to decrease as they start migrating back to Antarctic feeding grounds, but excellent sightings are still possible.
For the best experience, we recommend booking tours between August and October, when whale activity is at its highest.
